What Is a Breast Lift?
Over time, many women experience stretching and sagging in the breasts. This may be due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or simply aging. Frequently, these women like the size of their breasts, but not the shape. A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, can address this concern by removing excess skin while restoring a more youthful bust line. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, the dark skin around the nipple. Some clients choose to combine this procedure with breast augmentation for more dramatic improvement in firmness and volume. Dr. Lavine’s clients are happy with the outcome of their breast lift; they enjoy a more youthful appearance and profile, as well as greater self-esteem.
How Is a Breast Lift Performed?
During this procedure, a careful anchor-shaped incision on the underside of the breast permits the removal of extra skin around the areola and from the lower breast. In some cases, the nipple and areola may be moved upward for a more balanced look.
Women who have smaller breasts with only minimal sagging may be better suited for smaller-incision mastopexy, such as concentric (“doughnut”) mastopexy, in which two circular incisions are used instead of the traditional anchor shape.
Both types of breast lift can create even, pert breasts with a more professional appearance and enhanced self-confidence.
Women who plan to have children in the future should postpone this procedure since pregnancy can stretch the skin and alter the results of this method. Mastopexy does not interfere with breastfeeding.
What Can I Expect during Recovery from a Breast Lift?
For the first few days, you will need to wear a surgical bra or elastic bandage, and your breasts may feel swollen and bruised. After this, a soft support bra will be required for a few weeks, and any post-operative numbness or swelling will gradually subside over the next weeks or months. Most patients return to work one or two weeks after the surgery.
